Discover Dash-Dyeing

Your Guide to Dash-Dye

The Science Behind The Dash

Welcome to the world of Dash Dyeing, a textile-transformation process that blends intuitive creativity with powerful color chemistry. If you’ve ever wanted to dye your own clothing at home — quickly, vividly, and with professional results — this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Soda Ash

Bake Your Baking Soda
When you heat baking soda at 300°F for an hour, it chemically transforms into sodium carbonate (soda ash). This raises the pH dramatically (from ~8 to ~11). High pH = essential for fiber-reactive dyes.

50/50 Mixture

Mix Your Dye
Our activated dyes are pre-mixed in a 50/50 ratio of soda ash and dye pigment, giving you: instant color activation, clearer color blooms, faster reactions, and richer, more dependable vibrancy

Water

Activate Your Dye
A small amount of water triggers the pH change, the fiber opening, the dye molecule activation and the immediate bonding reaction. No pre-soaking is required. Just chemistry, intuition and a little time set.

What is Dash Dyeing?

Dash Dyeing is a surface-activation method where color is applied in powdered form onto damp natural fibers (cotton, rayon, hemp, linen). Instead of dye baths, buckets, or long soak times, Dash Dyeing uses soda ash as the alkaline activator, Procion MX dyes as the fiber-reactive pigment source, your movement (dash, sprinkle, flick, brush) as the artistic tool, and pressure or time to set the color permanently. This creates explosive blooms of color, watercolor gradients, soft veils, and deeply saturated hues. The process feels like painting, weather, and chemistry all happening at once.

Step By Step

Prepare Your Dye

Gather Materials: Purchase Procion MX dye powder directly from Dharma Trading Co.. Combine equal parts of dye powder and baking soda ash (you can make your own by baking baking soda at 300 degrees for an hour). Or skip the prep and purchase our activated dye kits, pre-mixed with activator. With over 150 vibrant color options, each applicator bottle is ready to use.

Prepare Your Fabric

Fabric Choice Matters: Opt for natural fibers like cotton or rayon for the best dye absorption. Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester, which does not absorb the dye.

Dampen the Fabric: Lightly moisten your fabric with water. No need for additional chemicals or soaking solutions. Wring out any extra water.

Dash Your Colors

Using the applicator bottle of our activated dyes, dash your chosen colors onto your damp fabric in any design you like. Experiment with different techniques, such as flicking, sprinkling, or pouring, to create unique patterns and textures. Be mindful that you can always add more pigment but it’s hard to remove it. Be mindful of each dash of color.

Set the Colors

Standard Method: Allow the fabric to sit for at least 4 hours at 70°F (21°C). During this time, the dye chemically bonds with the fabric fibers.

Quick Method: If you’re short on time, place the fabric in a pressure cooker and heat it to 5 PSI for 1 minute to set the dye instantly.

Rinse & Wash

Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the fabric in cold water until the water runs clear, removing any excess dye.

Final Wash: Wash the fabric in warm water with a mild detergent. For the first wash, it’s best to wash separately or with similar colors to prevent any residual bleeding.
